Great capture, Dave. How close were you ? Kestrels are very difficult to approach. I've had terrible luck with them.

Last winter I was lucky enough to be looking out the window at the right moment to see a Kestrel take a sparrow. It was incredible. It struck, adjusted its grip and was gone in a flash. It was'nt on the ground for more than one second.

Thanks - i was awe struck when I saw this - i think i got to 30 feet of it and was amazed that it didn't fly off at first. I was able to get several snaps off before it flew off - they are amazing to watch as they hover. It must have been truely special to watch it capture the sparrow.
